Norfolk County Council voted to adopt a new Environmental Policy at its meeting on 24 March 2026, with the measure passing by 57 votes to zero, with two abstentions.

The policy was proposed by Cllr James Bensly and seconded by the Leader, Cllr Kay Mason Billig. It will now sit within Norfolk County Council's Policy Framework, giving it formal standing alongside other core council policies.

The near-unanimous vote reflects broad cross-party support for the policy, though the minutes do not detail the specific targets or commitments it contains.

The adoption came on the same day the council also unanimously approved the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service Community Risk Management Plan 2026-31, with both items having been recommended by Cabinet at its meeting on 2 March 2026.

The new Environmental Policy will carry over to whatever council structures emerge from the ongoing Local Government Reorganisation process, which is expected to result in new unitary authorities for Norfolk.
