Norfolk planning meeting abandoned after councillors fail to show up

A Norfolk County Council planning meeting was cancelled on 20 March 2026 after too few councillors turned up to make it legally valid. Only six of the required seven committee members were present, meaning no decisions could be made.

A Norfolk County Council planning meeting was cut short on Friday 20 March after the committee failed to reach the minimum number of members needed to conduct official business.

Chair Cllr Eric Vardy adjourned the meeting for 20 minutes shortly after 10am to give any late-arriving councillors a chance to attend. When no further members arrived, he declared the meeting inquorate at 10:17am — just 17 minutes after it began.

Seven committee members are required to be present for the Planning (Regulatory) Committee to legally proceed. Only six attended.

All agenda items were left unresolved. Council officers said they would discuss when the outstanding planning matters could be rescheduled and heard.
