Norfolk Coast Management Plan Approved to Protect One of Europe's Fastest-Eroding Coastlines

Cabinet has approved the Norfolk Coast National Landscape Management Plan for 2025 to 2030, setting out how the county's internationally significant coastal habitats will be protected, managed and enhanced over the next five years. The plan is produced every five years by the Norfolk Coast Partnership.

Norfolk's coastline — described as one of the fastest-eroding in Europe — will be managed under a new five-year plan approved by Cabinet in March.

The Norfolk Coast National Landscape Management Plan 2025-2030 covers conservation of internationally significant habitats, support for nature-friendly farming, sustainable tourism, and adaptation to climate change. It does not cover sea defences.

Vice Chair Cllr Andrew Jamieson, who chairs the Norfolk Coast Partnership, said the plan was built on the principle that lasting change happens when communities come together. He said it invited everyone — from local residents to businesses — to play a role in protecting and shaping the coast.

The plan aims to support sustainable tourism businesses, preserve biodiversity and empower local communities to lead initiatives that benefit both people and the landscape.

The Chair, Cllr Kay Mason Billig, used the discussion to call on the government to do more to defend Norfolk's coastline, which faces significant erosion pressure. Cabinet voted to approve the plan, which Norfolk County Council is legally required to support under its statutory obligations.
