Norfolk fire service forecasts £870k overspend as costs rise
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is on course to overspend its budget by £870,000 this financial year, driven by rising staffing and operational costs. The council says it is tightening spending controls to address the pressure.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is forecast to overspend its 2026-27 budget by £870,000, according to the council's latest financial monitoring report presented to Cabinet on 11 September.
The overspend is being driven by increased operational activity alongside rising staffing and non-staff costs. Cabinet members were told that spending controls are being strengthened to address the pressure.
The fire service figure is one of several financial pressures the council is managing this year. Children's Services is balancing its books after mitigating a £3.5 million pressure, though officers warned there remains a risk around a £6.9 million target to reduce the cost of placing children in care.
Adult Social Services is also forecasting a balanced position, but only after taking action to offset a £2.335 million pressure linked to the cost of purchasing care.
Overall, the council says it is still forecasting a balanced budget for 2026-27, with general reserves projected at £30.697 million by the end of March 2027. Cabinet noted that executive directors are expected to take action to eliminate any overspends within their services.
The council also approved writing off £44,044.79 in bad debts and reprofiled £11.412 million of capital spending from this year into future years.
