Norfolk council to sell Great Yarmouth coastal centre
Norfolk County Council has voted to put the Great Yarmouth Norfolk Coastal Centre up for sale on the open market, declaring it surplus to requirements. The disposal is part of a wider package of property sell-offs approved at the September cabinet meeting.
Norfolk County Council has declared the Great Yarmouth Norfolk Coastal Centre surplus to its requirements and instructed its property director to sell it on the open market.
The decision was made at the cabinet meeting on 11 September 2026, alongside a series of other property disposals including farm buildings in Nordelph and South Walsham, a cottage in Hopton-on-Sea, and a small parcel of land in Aylsham.
Cabinet members were told the sites are no longer needed for service delivery. Retaining them would mean incurring holding costs for assets that contribute nothing to council operations.
The council's Cabinet Member for Commercial Assets and Revenue Generation said the disposals form part of the authority's strategy to release properties with "latent value" where operational needs can be met from elsewhere.
For the Great Yarmouth site, the director of property is authorised to accept the most advantageous offer received, provided it falls within standard delegated financial limits. Any offer above those limits would require sign-off from both the director of strategic finance and the cabinet member.
A playing field on Barker Lane in Sprowston is also being declared surplus, though cabinet confirmed that sale is intended to maintain the existing use of the site. The council will first attempt to sell or grant a long lease directly to the current tenant, with the open market as a fallback if no deal is reached within six months.
The Aylsham land at Bure Valley Lane South — described as a small leftover parcel from a previous highways scheme — will similarly be offered first to its current occupier before going to the open market if no agreement is reached within six months.
