Thetford museum wins £198,000 lottery grant for Duleep Singh centenary
The Ancient House Museum in Thetford has received £198,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to mark 100 years since the death of Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, the man who gifted the museum to the town. A dedicated exhibition celebrating his life and legacy is now open.
The Ancient House Museum in Thetford has secured £198,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to run a two-year programme celebrating the Duleep Singh family, coinciding with the centenary of Prince Frederick Duleep Singh's death.
Prince Frederick Duleep Singh is historically significant to Thetford as the benefactor who gifted the Ancient House Museum to the town. The new exhibition, now open, commemorates his life, legacy and that act of generosity.
The lottery-funded programme supports a range of activity at the museum, including its established schools programme which draws pupils from Thetford and further afield, as well as the THCeenage Heritage Collective Youth Group.
Members of the Norfolk Joint Museums Committee congratulated the museum on its contribution to stimulating children's learning about both local and international history when the update was presented at the committee's meeting on 24 July 2026.
The Breckland Area Museums Committee meeting at which the update was originally reported was inquorate, meaning no formal decisions could be taken, but it proceeded as an information-only session.
