Norfolk Museums hit record school visits as visitor numbers surge 41%

Norfolk Museums Service recorded over 52,000 school visits in 2025-26 — among the highest school engagement figures in the country — while total visitor numbers jumped 41% year-on-year in the first two months of 2026/27.

Norfolk's museums have recorded a dramatic rise in visitors, with 75,864 people through the doors between 1 April and 30 May 2026 — up from 53,695 during the same period in 2025/26, a jump of more than 41%.

Officers told the Norfolk Joint Museums Committee that the increase is partly driven by the reopening of the Norwich Castle Keep, which completed works in summer 2025 and added new attractions including rooftop battlements and a British Museum Partnership Gallery.

School visits reached 52,058 across the service's 10 museums in 2025/26, which officers described as an exceptional result. The Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth alone welcomed 10,398 students in the previous financial year — a record for that venue.

The committee also heard that Norwich Castle recently reached the final of the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year award and won the Museums and Heritage Award for Restoration or Conservation Project of the Year.

Membership numbers for the Museum Pass scheme have continued to rise, boosted by the Access All Eras campaign, though councillors asked for future visitor reports to break down figures between paid admissions, free visits, and pass holders.

The surge in footfall comes alongside early financial pressures in the service's 2026/27 revenue budget. Officers said they remained hopeful the position would improve through the summer and autumn as new income came in, with the aim of breaking even without drawing on reserves.

The Arts Council England funding renewal process is also approaching, with guidance expected in September 2026 and applications due in November for the 2028-2033 funding period.
