Norfolk Council Raises Alarm Over RAF Barnham Asylum Seeker Plans
Norfolk County Council is lobbying the Home Office to abandon plans to house up to 1,250 asylum seekers at RAF Barnham in Suffolk, after complaining it was not consulted. The Leader confirmed the council is working alongside Suffolk County Council to oppose the proposals.
Norfolk County Council's Leader told the full council meeting that the Home Office had failed to consult any local authorities or communities in Norfolk before announcing plans to house up to 1,250 asylum seekers at RAF Barnham in Suffolk.
The Leader said he had written to the Home Secretary in June 2026 to outline the council's concerns, but had only recently received a response. He confirmed Norfolk County Council would continue to work with Suffolk County Council to lobby the Home Office to abandon the plans.
Cllr Jonathan Wedon indicated his political group's support for the campaign, offering to assist the Leader in efforts to challenge the proposals. The Leader thanked him for the cross-party backing.
RAF Barnham is located in Suffolk, close to the Norfolk border. The council's concerns centre on the lack of prior consultation with neighbouring authorities and communities who could be affected by the scale of the proposed accommodation.
