The number of people killed or seriously injured on Norfolk roads has risen over the last 12 months, despite recent safety measures including average speed cameras and new speed limits on key routes, the Norfolk Police and Crime Panel heard on 27 April 2026.

Police and Crime Commissioner Sarah Taylor told the panel that road safety remains a priority and that delivery is shared across the Road Safety Partnership, which includes Norfolk County Council and National Highways. She said further work within policing is being pursued, including discussions with the Chief Constable about expanding Operation Foxtail — described as a successful targeted enforcement approach — subject to available capacity and resources.

Panel members pressed for data on when serious collisions most frequently occur, asking whether analysis of peak times or seasons could help focus enforcement activity. The PCC said the Road Safety Partnership holds the relevant data and analysis.

The panel also highlighted the importance of enforcement against uninsured and defective vehicles, noting that checks can identify and remove dangerous vehicles from the road.

On the A11, one member reported a noticeable improvement in safety since average speed cameras were installed on the straight stretch of road, with a significant reduction in accidents. The PCC agreed the cameras should be made permanent. She also told the panel that Norfolk County Council had objected to a separate road safety scheme, and that subsequent discussions meant the scheme would not be brought forward again.

The panel noted but did not resolve the wider question of how to bring down KSI figures county-wide, with the PCC indicating that road safety is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated action across multiple agencies.
